South Central Regional Medical Center Celebrates the Opening of State-of-the-Art Dermatology Clinic in Laurel

In an effort to provide advanced technology to the community, South Central Dermatology Clinic, a division of South Central Regional Medical Center, has recently moved to a newly constructed center located at 1410 Jefferson Street in Laurel. The opening of the new center was celebrated Thursday, September 13th at 5 p.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony sponsored by the Jones County Chamber of Commerce. The 12,000 square foot state of the art facility also provides space for The Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery Center of South Central Mississippi which is set to relocate to the building in mid to late November. Dermatologists Amy Adams, D.O. and David Roy, D.O. are already seeing patients at the new location.

Doug Higginbotham, President and Chief Executive Officer at South Central Regional Medical Center, said, “One year after our ground breaking ceremony, we are pleased to move our dermatology services into the new center.” He said the final phase of the project will conclude with the relocation of The Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery Center of South Central Mississippi currently located at 1105 Adams Street in Laurel. Hossein “Hoss” Nasajpour, M.D., Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeon in Laurel, looks forward to seeing patients at the new location.

With the South Central network continuing to grow and provide advancements in medical technology, the goal of patient care remains a top priority. Mr. Higginbotham said, “Health care is always changing. Our primary goal at South Central is to provide the best care possible for our patients. In order to accomplish that goal, we must continually upgrade facilities and medical technology."

New technology available at the center has allowed the dermatologists to perform new procedures. Dr. David Roy states, “One reason we are excited to have the new facility is because we are now able to provide PUVA Light Therapy, Photodynamic Therapy for pre-cancers, and Narrow Band UVB Therapy.” This technology includes some of the latest technology available in the field of Dermatology.

Dr. Adams said, “Our new center has six exam rooms; four surgical suites with a dedicated suite for MOHS procedures; a PUVA Light Therapy suite; and an onsite laboratory which allows us to provide the most effective care to our patients.” Along with new treatments and services, South Central Dermatology Clinic will continue to provide treatment of skin cancer, skin infections, psoriasis and all conditions related to hair, skin and nails. They will also perform MOHS surgery in the new location.

MOHS micrographic surgery is a surgical technique used for removing many types of skin cancers. This technique is often mentioned as having the highest cure rate for basal cell carcinoma, known as the most common type of skin cancer. MOHS surgery differs from other treatments in that it allows the immediate and complete microscopic examination of the removed cancerous tissue. “We examine not just sections of the tissue, but 100 percent of the margin, edge and bottom of the tissue. This gives patients a higher cure rate and allows us to remove less tissue. By using this technique, we can be very conservative with the cut, but still know we removed all of the cancer,” Dr. Roy said.

MOHS surgery provides an exact result while studying the layer of tissue. If cancerous cells are detected, the process is duplicated until all tissues are free of cancer. Although MOHS surgery provides the smallest cut and highest cure rate, not all patients are candidates for the procedure.

“If a patient is not a candidate for MOHS surgery, there are other treatment options that are offered,” states Dr. Roy. “Radiation therapy, watchful waiting on non-aggressive tumors and many other options are available. We can provide a lot of choices for our patients.” South Central Dermatology Clinic is the only facility in this region performing MOHS surgery.

Skin care is the first line of defense against a large number of skin related conditions. Skin is your body's largest organ. It serves as a protective barrier between your insides and the rest of the world, helps regulate body temperature and acts as a filter. Skin exists in a constant state of growth, with old cells dying as new cells are forming. It's affected by every aspect of the world, from what you eat to where you live. Healthy skin is better able to fight signs of aging, heals much faster and staves off potential disease better than unhealthy skin.

Dr. Adams developed her own skin care line because she understands the importance of proper skin care. Her customized, medical grade skin care line, A2 DermSolutions, is exclusively available for patients at South Central Dermatology Clinic. Dr. Adams says, “Each product has been formulated to work with the local climate level to create profound effects on the structure of the patient’s skin. The products work to provide healthier, younger skin by replenishing the skin.” A trial kit can be purchased for $20 and gives patients the opportunity to utilize the skin care line. The purchase of products does not require a physician order.

It is nice to have advanced technology and services in Laurel so that patients do not have to travel outside of the area for treatment.
