Dr. Sand completed a fellowship in Pediatric and Adult Sleep Medicine at the University of Michigan in June of this year, after completing a residency in Family Medicine at McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mount Clemens, Michigan, in 2019. Dr. Sand is a native of Yale, Michigan. Physicians who are trained in sleep medicine assist patients who suffer from disorders or conditions that affect their ability to sleep, such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy and night terrors. Sleep medicine specialists often act as consultants to family medicine providers who are seeking advice for their patients who are experiencing sleep-related complications.

“I am excited to be part of the medical community in Laurel,” said Dr. Sand. “Dr. Wallace has successfully helped many patients throughout the years, and I hope to continue this service for patients in the region. I have a background in primary care, so I hope to build relationships with family medicine/primary care providers to assist more patients who may be living with sleep disorders and are unaware of it.”

Dr. Sand, a native of Michigan, finds that Jones County is very similar to his community. “I come from a small town, so I appreciate the hard working attitude of residents in Jones County. I have found the people here to be passionate about their families and their community, so I hope to provide services that make them passionate about their healthcare.”

To diagnose sleep-related disorders, South Central Sleep Center may use screening devices, questionnaires, actigraphs, apnographs, oximeters, overnight sleep studies, polysomnograms, home sleep studies and maintenance of wakefulness tests, among others. Dr. Sand explains, “As we transition into a new period of sleep medicine, I aim to provide more outpatient sleep medicine services. I believe that education is an important part of the doctor/patient relationship. Education takes time, but it is paramount in making important health decisions, which should happen in a team approach. It is always important for the patient and doctor to be on the same page.”
