ALS

Posted on September 14, 2015

ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neuro-degenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, meaning that the muscles are affected, but the brain is not.

Lynetta Welch’s mother was diagnosed with ALS at age 85.  The family knew they needed to find a way to communicate with her, so South Central worked with her to get a speech-generation device so that she could continue to tell her family stories.  “We still know what she’s thinking, and she can tell us stuff we value and treasure.”

For more information, call the South Central Speech Therapy Department at (601) 399-0539.
