Concussions

Posted on October 5, 2015

A concussion can cause a temporary change in the cognitive function of the brain, and can occur after an impact or head-on collision.

Dr. Derrick L. Burgess, MD, explains that if a concussion is not diagnosed at the first occurrence, then “the player or patient can be at increased risk of further brain injury, especially if they return to play or have a second concussion…which can lead to brain swelling, paralysis, or even death.”

The South Central Sports Medicine team uses impact testing for immediate post-concussion assessment and cognitive testing.
