Johnny Magee, Mayor of the City of Laurel, signed a proclamation Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. proclaiming the month of November as MoVember Month in the City of Laurel. Mo (short for moustache) vember is an international initiative designed to promote Men’s Health. Pictured, left to right, standing behind the mayor are: Karen Vanderslice, R.N., Community Health Coordinator at South Central Regional Medical Center; Doug Higginbotham, President and CEO at South Central; Dr. Cameron Pimperl, Radiation Oncologist at e+Oncologics, Inc.; Nate Beach, Plant Leader at GE Aviation; Peter Privon, Team Coach at GE Aviation; Steve Effa, Facilities Leader at GE Aviation; and Kathy Eason, Patient Navigator at South Central Cancer Center in Laurel.

Big steps have been taken towards changing attitudes and habits relating to men’s health around the world.  Each year during the month of November mustaches are seen on thousands of men’s faces across the world representing International Mo (short for moustache)vember Month. Men who participate raise vital awareness for men’s health related issues, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health initiatives.

Mayor Johnny Magee signed a proclamation Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. proclaiming November as MoVember Month in the City of Laurel.  MoVember aims to fulfill its vision of having an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health by continuing to spark conversation and spread awareness of men’s health issues each year. Through the international campaign there will be a significant understanding of the health risks that men face and men will be encouraged to act on that knowledge. Men’s lives will be saved as a result of the effort.

Officials from GE Aviation and the South Central Medical Community were on hand for the proclamation signing. Nate Beach, Plant Leader at GE Aviation, and the male employees of GE Aviation, recently challenged Doug Higginbotham, the President and Chief Executive Officer at South Central Regional Medical Center, and a team of male physicians and employees from the South Central Health System, to a moustache growing contest during November. Male employees from each of the facilities are set to compete in the challenge. More information will be released to the press during the “Shave the Date” event planned for Friday, November 1st.
