Jones County and Mississippi, as a whole, have some of the highest rates for diabetes in the country. South Central Regional Medical Center offers a diabetes education program to teach people how to manage their disease. Sandra Faircloth, RN, MSN, CW is the Diabetes Education Coordinator. She uses the program to educate people on what diabetes is and how it effects the body. Sandra also gives each individual the tools they need to change their conditions. The Diabetes Education Program encourages healthy eating, becoming active, monitoring blood sugar, monitoring medications, and how to recognize symptoms. This program also helps patients understand how to communicate with their doctors. By knowing how to handle symptoms, it makes solving problems and identifying breakthroughs clearer.
