ALS, frequently known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, causes nerve cells to gradually break down over time.
Sherri Davis, a Speech Language Pathologist at SCRMC, explains that “ALS often interferes with a patient’s ability to produce voice and speak clearly, and it worsens over time.” She further explains that they still want to say the things they’ve always said, but are just unable to do so.
SCRMC has been working on getting speech-generating devices to allow people with ALS to “speak” at a normal volume, whisper, or even over the phone.
