1 in 5 children ages 13 to 18 have or will have a serious mental illness, while 50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14. That’s why Dr. Stewart Samson at South Central Behavioral Health Services provides mental healthcare for children as young as age 6.

Samson’s joy is helping children to cope with a world that is primarily adult-oriented. His job is to evaluate children, establish what issues need to be worked on, and hand it off to his therapist, then continue to monitor the progress of that child.

“The idea of getting help for a mental condition is one of coordinated effort and may require a multi-prong approach to helping whoever it is coming for that assistance. If the patient is willing to work and is able to establish a level of trust with the people who are helping, their lives can be improved in multiple ways,” states Samson.
