Cataract Surgery: Study Finds Procedure is Life-Extending in Senior Adults

Did you know that cataract surgery in senior adults is actually life-extending? A recent study by the National Bureau of Economic Research has found that Americans over 65 are living longer and with less disabilities, and that one of the main reasons is due to cataract surgery. Cataract surgery with a senior aged patient aids in the prevention of falls, allows for safe driving and increases the length of working. Judith L. Bradley, MD, Ophthalmologist, at the Cataract Center of Laurel, is working to avoid vision problems for patients.

“Cataracts are a medical condition in which the lens of the eye becomes progressively opaque, resulting in blurred vision. There is always a fear of going blind from cataract surgery, but my goal is to ease that fear,” states Dr. Bradley. “Today, we offer blade-free lasers and procedures that last just a few minutes. With cataract surgery, patients are able to go home the same day.”

Traditional cataract surgery has been a small incision surgery, yet the Cataract Center of Laurel offers state-of-the-art technology through the LenSx Blade Free system. During cataract surgery, your cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens, known as an intraocular lens.

“Cataract surgery is a highly successful procedure,” states Dr. Bradley. “Improved vision is the result in more than 95 percent of cases.”

By using the LenSx system, incisions are precise and are able to correct corneal stigmatism at the same time. Recovery from cataract surgery is quick with many patients able to return to normal activities in the first week. Laser surgery provides clearer vision in the first day.

“After cataract surgery, patients frequently express their delight in freedom from glasses,” stated Dr. Bradley. “It is nice to offer state-of-the-art technology in Laurel. Cataract surgery procedures are performed at the Laurel Endoscopy and Surgery Center as outpatient surgery.”

Cataracts are a common cause of decreased vision, particularly for the elderly, but they are treatable. To determine whether cataracts or some other problem is the cause of your vision loss, contact The Cataract Center of Laurel to schedule an appointment with Dr. Judith L. Bradley. Together, Dr. Bradley can help you decide if cataract surgery is appropriate for you.
