Debbie Wilkinson started her volunteer career at South Central Regional Medical Center in October, 2016, in the Outpatient Surgery Holding Area. Twice a week, Debbie assists patients and their families in the surgery area, escorting them to the proper holding room, explaining procedures to family members and escorting the family back to the waiting room when the patient goes to surgery. As the first person the patient and family sees when entering the holding area, Debbie is comforting, reassuring and friendly.
Debbie saw a need to bring cheer to surgery patients and their families during the Christmas season. Wearing a Santa hat, she gave homemade candy to each person entering the surgery holding area, including patients’ families, visitors and staff. For Valentine’s Day, Debbie again made and shared candy with those who came through surgery holding. She also baked a large tray of Valentine cookies and placed them in the Surgery Waiting Room for visitors to enjoy. During the Easter season, Debbie provided treats to each child who was having surgery.
Debbie states that she feels like she is part of a team and is glad to help in whatever ways possible. She looks forward to volunteering each week and encourages others to become part of the South Central Regional Medical Center Volunteers. South Central Regional Medical Center is truly grateful to Debbie and the entire team of volunteers for comforting and spreading cheer to patients, family members and hospital staff.
