Healthcare is changing, and now more than ever the emphasis is on preventive medicine to catch abnormalities early and to treat them early. One of the most important routine procedures for women is a pap smear to screen for cervical cancer. Bridget Cahill, nurse practitioner at Ellisville OBGYN Clinic says that if an abnormality is found on a woman’s pap smear, the next step is a colposcopy. During a colposcopy, they bring the woman in and use a colposcope, a high power microscope, which allows them to see the cells in a more in-depth view. They may take a pinch if they see any abnormal cells, and send it to a pathologist to know if the patient needs further treatment. Cervical cancer is highly prevalent in women; fortunately, routine screenings can save your life. Cahill states, “If you haven’t been in your gynecologist’s office, make an appointment. Most of the time there’s something we can do either in the office or a small, out-patient procedure that’s going to help you.”
