SCRMC | Chemo Drugs

Posted on November 20, 2017

Chemotherapy is the treatment of cancer with one or more cytotoxic neoplastic drugs, and has been around for more than 70 years.  Today, chemotherapy is the standard of care for cancer treatment.  Dr. Nikhil Mukhi at South Central Cancer Center explains that chemotherapy is a group of medications used to beat cancer.  He discusses that it is not one medication, but it is hundreds of different medications.  Fortunately for the patients in our area, there is a new state-of-the-art pharmacy in South Central Regional Medical Center where each of these chemotherapy drugs are prepared.  Every time a patient comes in to get their cancer treatment, their bloodwork gets checked to make sure their blood counts are doing good, their kidney and liver function is also checked.  Based on the information gathered, the medicine gets adjusted.  Gary Lott, director of pharmacy services at South Central Regional Medical Center, explains that each patient’s chemotherapy is prepared in the pharmacy at SCRMC at the time of their treatment based on the doctor’s orders.
