South Central Regional Medical Center Works to End Older Adult Falls

Free Community Education Event to Feature Education and Screening.

One day every year, across the country, thousands of educators, caregivers, health and aging professionals and older adults focus their efforts on one goal: preventing falls. That is why South Central Regional Medical Center is partnering with the National Council on Aging and the Falls Free® Coalition to celebrate Fall Prevention Awareness Day on Friday, September 21.

Falls are a leading cause of injury for people aged 65 and older, but they are not an inevitable part of aging and there are proven ways to prevent them. South Central Regional Medical Center is hosting a free community event that will educate older adults on how to stay active, independent and safe in their homes and communities.

If you would like to learn more about fall prevention, South Central Regional Medical Center invites you to attend the event on Friday, September 21st. The educational event will be held at South Central Place in Laurel at 2260 HWY 15 North from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Information for attendees will include balance testing by physical therapists, education sessions from local healthcare providers on overall health needs and home modification needs for aging adults.

Activities will include for the Fall Prevention Awareness Event will include:

  • Introduction and Fall statistics
  • Medication issues related to falls – Provided by Local Pharmacist
  • Home modification and how to prevent falls – Provided by Latisha Fisher, PT
  • Balance testing – Provided by Physical Therapists
  • Differential Balance Disorders and how physical therapy can help – Provided by Kyle Crager, DPT
  • Vertigo and Inner Ear Disorders – Provided by Jamie Sisk, MD, ENT Surgical Clinic of Laurel

“Fall prevention is a team effort that takes a balance of education, intervention and community support,” said Kourtney Murphy, DPT at SCRMC. “This community event is an opportunity to look at our everyday surroundings, be aware of falls hazards and take action to stay safe from falls.”

This event is open to the community. The event is sponsored by the South Central Health Care Foundation, whose goal is to improve community health and provide health resources with funds raised throughout the year. The South Central Health Care Foundation was established in 1992 and serves to inspire charitable giving that improves the health of the community.
