Chronic wounds, known as the silent epidemic, may develop from a variety of different medical conditions, and may not heal for many different reasons. As the population continues to age, rates of diabetes and obesity increases. These chronic diseases are contributing factors for wound care treatment. South Central Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center offers highly specialized wound care to patients suffering from diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections from trauma or surgery and other chronic wounds which have not healed in a reasonable amount of time.

Some of the leading-edge treatments offered at South Central include negative pressure wound therapy, debridement, application of cellular-based tissue or skin substitutes to the wound, offloading or total contact casts and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. This treatment allows the patient to breathe pure oxygen in a pressurized room for the treatment of wounds that will not heal.

“An increase in oxygenation in Wound Care treatment can help a patient to heal faster,” said Strebeck. “So we are proud to provide hyperbaric treatment to patients that qualify. We try to make it a very non-intimidating process. The chamber itself is made of clear acrylic, and the patient, although they are in the chamber, they can watch television, read a book or take a nap during their treatment. Patients are monitored throughout the process.”

Strebeck closed by stating, “I think the biggest thing that brings me joy about treating patients at South Central Wound Care is seeing patients that are very sick, they are not mobile and they cannot enjoy life; then fast forward several weeks, and these same patients are happy and ready to go be active participants in life again. At the end of treatment, we have a Wound Care Center Healing Bell. It is a goal for each patient to be able to ring the bell once they are healed.”
