1952 – 2022 | South Central Regional Medical Center Celebrates its 70th Anniversary.
Hospitals serve as cornerstone institutions for rural communities across the United States. Providing jobs, contributing to the economy of the community, and a continual focus on providing healthcare treatment in a timely, professional and efficient manner are major factors the South Central Regional Medical Center Health System (SCRMC) continues to provide the citizens of Jones County and those who live in surrounding counties.
On February 1, 1952, Jones County Community Hospital opened the doors to begin care for residents of the community. At that time, 58 Jones County residents worked in the 105 bed hospital. Over the years the facility has seen numerous additions and renovations to accommodate the growth of the medical center services. In January of 1989, the hospital’s board of trustees changed the name of the facility from Jones County Community Hospital to South Central Regional Medical Center.
President and Chief Executive Officer, Doug Higginbotham, stated, “When our facility first opened, we were a 105-bed hospital serving only residents of Jones County. Over the years, we have grown into a 285-bed regional medical center providing acute medical and surgical services to the residents of Jones, Jasper, Smith, and Wayne Counties. The name change in 1989 demonstrated our commitment to change the face of healthcare in this region. Our commitment remains the same, excellent care and service.”
The community has seen much growth in the past few decades as a result of new businesses, new industry, and expansions of services. With that, South Central has also continued to expand and add new programs and services. The healthcare system which includes more than 2,100 employees and more than 120 healthcare providers representing numerous medical specialties is continuing to bring some of the most advanced medical technology to this region allowing patients to receive their care close to home and family. South Central is a public, not for profit hospital owned by Jones County, MS, who has an economic impact to our local community annually of almost $200 million.
