Dr. Thoppil explains, “I wanted to help the world, so to pursue future mission work I moved to Poland and completed my medical degree at the Medical University in Lublin. Following medical school, I began clinical rotations in New York. Following graduation, I returned home to New Orleans to help rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. And it was then that I learned that sometimes helping the world starts at home.”

During this time, Dr. Thoppil completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He practiced as a hospitalist at West Jefferson Medical Center until 2015 when he moved to Hattiesburg to help found the Internal Medicine training program at Merit Health Wesley. While in Hattiesburg, he served as the Program Director for the Internal Medicine program, Chief of Staff, Chair of Graduate Medical Education and COVID Team Leader for his former health system.

Dr. Thoppil is now an Internal Medicine/Hospitalist at South Central Regional Medical Center.

“As an Internal Medicine Hospitalist, I take care of patients in the hospital,” said Dr. Thoppil. “We serve as a bridge between the primary care providers and the patient when a patient gets sick and needs to come to the hospital to receive further treatment.  Once the patient is discharged, we communicate with their primary care doctor their current treatment plan and work together to heal the patient. We have very good relationships with healthcare providers in our community. This is beneficial because it helps the patient get back to the doctors that know them best.”

Dr. Thoppil has practiced medicine since 2011. When asked what he loves about his role as an internal medicine/hospitalist physician, he stated, “One aspect that I love about serving in the Hospitalist role is that you get to see different people from all walks of life.  Different community bases, different diseases and the challenges that are there. Sometimes you get to be a fresh set of eyes on a familiar problem. You get to see people at their very sickest. You get to deal with their family members, be involved and at the same time hopefully resolve the ongoing issue. It is a challenge and it is why I love it.”

Dr. Deepu Thoppil is married to Dr. Monika Thoppil, Internal Medicine physician, at South Central Internal Medicine in Laurel. Dr. Thoppil closed by stating, “I’m glad to be part of the South Central Regional Medical Center family. I love the community here and the group of medical providers that are here. We all have the same goal and that is to help heal the patients and restore their lives.”
