Monika Thoppil, MD, Internal Medicine physician, recently joined the medical staff at South Central Internal Medicine. Dr. Thoppil completed her medical degree at the Medical University of Lublin in 2009. Following completion of medical school, Dr. Thoppil served in endocrinology and as a palliative care team member in the New Orleans area. She later relocated to the Pine Belt area with her husband, Dr. Deepu Thoppil, in 2015. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Merit Health Wesley in Hattiesburg.
Dr. Thoppil has always had a passion for medicine from a very young age. She explains, “As a child, I grew up as an immigrant in Canada from Poland. In my childhood years, I grew up in a poor, average family. Going to the doctor was not something that we could always afford, so when we were able to go I was afraid because I did not know what it would be like. But, at a young age, I found I enjoyed learning about medicine and anatomy. I pursued this as I worked toward my college degree and found that medical school was the best way to learn more.”
Dr. Thoppil completed medical school in Poland. She returned to her homeland during this time. “When I attended medical school in Poland as an adult, I met my extended family that still lived in the country. It was a rewarding time. This is where I also met my husband, Deepu.”
Following medical school completion, Drs. Thoppil moved to New York and then New Orleans to complete their residency, yet Dr. Monika Thoppil took a break from school to welcome two children into their lives. During this time, she served in endocrinology and as a palliative care team member. Dr. Thoppil relocated to Mississippi and completed her Internal Medicine residency.
“Today, I practice as a clinic based Internal Medicine physician,” said Dr. Thoppil. “Internal Medicine allows me to treat more complicated chronic conditions. This can include heart failure, COPD, diabetes, hypertension, prevention of hospitalization and stroke prevention.”
Dr. Thoppil is based at South Central Internal Medicine, which is located at 1203 Jefferson Street in Laurel. South Central Internal Medicine provides comprehensive medical treatment for adults. The focus of Internal Medicine is wellness prevention, diagnosis and treatment of chronic care patients with serious health conditions. She strives to serve her community and give the best care possible to her patients.
Dr. Thoppil explains further. “As an outpatient Internal Medicine physician, I am able to develop a relationship with the patient over time. You are able to get to know their conditions when they are not feeling well and work toward preventing hospitalization. The ultimate goal is to help people. Hospitals and medical offices are not always comfortable, but my hope is that each patient feels comfortable, informed and able to achieve their ultimate healthcare goal.”
