South Central Family Medicine & Urgent Care welcomes Jeanna Freeman-Berkey, PA, to the practice. Jeanna received a bachelor of science in nutrition from Mississippi State University. Following completion of undergraduate school, Jeanna completed a dietetic internship program at Lipscomb University. She worked as a clinical dietitian for four years before returning to school in 2020. In 2022, Jeanna graduated from Mississippi College with a master of science in medicine – physician assistant studies.
During her graduate program, Jeanna completed clinicals in family medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine, women’s health, behavioral medicine and general surgery. Jeanna’s vast experience in these specialties has thoroughly prepared her for her role as a family medicine physician assistant.
A physician assistant is a healthcare provider who works under the supervision of a physician. In this role, physician assistants provide medication recommendations, treatment plans, order and review lab work and diagnostics, and are able to assist in surgery.
Jeanna states, “One of the main reasons I chose South Central Family Medicine and Urgent Care is because of the sense of community and the relationships the medical providers have with their patients. It is important to build relationships with the patients to truly understand their overall health.”
Family medicine provides on-going comprehensive healthcare for patients of all ages. “In family medicine, we really focus on preventative care and prevention medicine,” states Jeanna. “We see patients with hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, respiratory issues and other conditions. We offer follow-up care so that we can stay ahead of their diseases and monitor their progress as closely as possible.”
Jeanna, who is a native of Greene County, MS, knows the importance of accessible healthcare. “Many times I will see patients who have traveled 30-45 minutes to see me. They have taken time out of their schedule, and my goal as their provider is to be there for them. I am their advocate and part of their team. It brings me joy when I follow-up with a patient and we can track improvements in their health. That is what I love so much about caring for patient’s chronic diseases.”
