Triple Threat of Respiratory Viruses: Covid-19, Flu and RSV

Posted on August 16, 2023

As we enter the back-to-school season, medical clinics are seeing an increase in illnesses. Flu, RSV and Covid-19 are circulating among patients of all ages. Being that these are separate, viral respiratory illnesses, it is possible to contract all three at the same time. It is important for people living with respiratory illnesses, like COPD or Asthma, and young children to take the proper precautions to maintain wellness.

Bailee Cerra, FNP

Bailee Cerra, FNP, at Ellisville Medical Clinic, stated, “We’re definitely seeing an uptick in Covid and flu cases right now. As we enter the fall season, RSV becomes an issue and it is possible to have two or three of these together. We have seen several cases of flu and Covid together, and it is concerning because it can lead to increased hospitalizations.”

Healthcare providers urge patients to stay up-to-date on vaccinations. Cerra states, “It is very important to take a flu shot and a Covid booster. Recently there has been a RSV vaccination released. This vaccination is for adults ages 60 and older. By receiving these vaccinations, it helps in disease prevention.”

It is also recommended to take a multivitamin, eat healthy, stay hydrated, rest when you are sick and if you are in a public area while sick, wear a mask. Cerra stated, “If those who are experiencing illnesses can avoid going to public areas, it will help decrease the spread of the disease.”

Symptoms medical providers are currently seeing in patients are fever, severe cough, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting. “The CDC recommends people to quarantine from 5 to 7 days from symptom onset, especially if you continue to run a fever.”
