Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) for Hair Loss

What is PRP treatment for hair restoration?

PRP non-surgical hair restoration consists of the application of your own Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) topically and by injection into the area of thinning hair to stimulate new hair growth and improve health and texture of existing hair.

How does the PRP treatment work?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is used to stimulate and nourish follicles for hair growth. High concentrated plasma contains platelets that release growth factors; these growth factors have been shown to generate new hair and improve the density and health of your existing hair.

Is there any discomfort and downtime with this treatment?

There is minimal tenderness and mild swelling in the injection sites for 3-5 days following the treatment.

How long does it take for a single treatment?

The entire treatment including preparation of your PRP in our office, cleaning your treatment area and injection of the PRP into the scalp takes less than an hour for most patients.

What results should I expect from my PRP treatment?

PRP has been shown to induce new hair growth in both male and female pattern hair loss, decelerate hair loss, make finer hairs thicker, and increase density and strength of hairs.

How many treatments will I need for hair restoration?

We recommend starting with 3 treatments, 4 weeks apart for best results with thinning hair as an initial treatment. You will need maintenance treatments every 6-12 months thereafter to maintain the results of your PRP hair regeneration treatment.

How soon will I see results from my PRP treatment?

Although you will start to see improvement in hair texture, a thickness of hair shaft and growth of new hairs in the treated area within two weeks after treatment, it typically takes 3 to 6 months from your initial treatment to see measurable results.

What are the side effects of PRP treatment for thinning hair?

Because the PRP is obtained from your own blood, it virtually eliminates the possibility of an allergic reaction.

  • Like with any treatment involving needle injections there may be mild bleeding, which is easily controlled with the application of pressure
  • Small risk of bruising and infection at the injection site
  • Minimal tenderness in the treated area which can last a few days
  • In a small number of individuals, there may be mild swelling of the treated area which can last a few days.
  • Rarely there may be shedding of hair.
