Hand Therapy: Helping to Restore and Return Function
If you have an injury to your hand, wrist, arm, or elbow or are experiencing chronic pain or discomfort doing daily tasks, it’s probably time to see a hand therapist. Hand therapy is the evaluation and treatment of injuries and conditions that occur in the upper extremities including the shoulder, arm, elbow, forearm, wrist and hand. Therapy of the hand consists of therapy that restores and returns a person to their highest level of function. South Central Rehabilitation Services in Laurel offers individualized treatment by our Certified Hand Therapist, Alaura Culpepper, MOTR/L, CHT.
Culpepper explains, “Often I treat patients who are experiencing limitations in their range of motion, coordination, strength, or any condition that is stopping them from fulfilling their daily activities. Each person has a different goal, so it is important to individualize the patient’s treatment. We evaluate the deficits and set goals for therapy.”
South Central Rehabilitation Services provides non-operative interventions, preventative care and post-surgical rehabilitation for a wide variety of upper extremity disorders. Patients with chronic conditions, such as arthritis, or neurologic conditions, such as a stroke, can benefit from therapy to help improve function. Treatment is available for patients, ages newborn through adults. There are a variety of techniques used for therapy, including activity and exercise programs, custom orthotic fabrication, management of pain and swelling and wound and scar care. South Central Rehabilitation Services also works with local industries to educate employees in healthy work habits for hand therapy.
“It is encouraging to see a patient go from not being able to use their extremity to coming back excited that they were able to accomplish their personal goal,” said Culpepper. “It is not only a celebration for the patient, but also for myself as a therapist. I am excited to be able to help patients grow.”
Alaura, our Certified Hand Therapist, evaluates and treats any upper limb problem, providing post-operative rehabilitation, preventative, non-operative or conservative treatment, or industry consultation. She will work closely with the patient’s medical provider and provide a continuum of care, starting within days of injury or surgery and continuing until the patient can return to work and have a productive lifestyle.
South Central Rehabilitation Services offers a variety of services, including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.
