September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to bring attention to one of the leading causes of death in the United States. In 2022 alone, over 49,000 lives were lost to suicide- approximately one death every 11 minutes. However, this number doesn’t include the many more who contemplate or attempt suicide. Every community is impacted by depression and suicidality, highlighting the need for awareness and action.
According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide risk is highest when stressors and health challenges lead to feelings of hopelessness. Recognizing the warning signs can help prevent tragedy. These signs include:

It is important to remember that everyone can play a part in suicide prevention, as it affects not only the individual but also their loved ones and the broader community.
