Renovations Underway as South Central Kicks Off Multi-Phase Renovation Plan

Phase one renovation work is beginning at South Central Regional Medical Center as it begins a multi-phase plan to renovate and expand facilities. This renovation is yet another intentional aspect of the hospital’s efforts to improve the patient experience at SCRMC.

Phase one, which was recently approved by the Board of Trustees, includes the renovation of the first-floor patient rooms and first floor hallways. These renovations will include the addition of new flooring, new lighting and other aesthetic improvements. Construction projects will not impact patient care, and there is no loss of overall bed count at SCRMC during these renovations.

“We are excited about the amount of growth we are seeing across our network,” said SCRMC President and CEO, Gregg Gibbes. “Our new Graduate Medical Education Program, our transition to Epic and the overall growth we are seeing in patient demand and treatment capabilities necessitates the hastening of our expansion plans for our facilities. We are excited to make these changes that we know will improve patient care.”

In addition to these renovations, the hospital is also undergoing construction in several additional areas. One important new addition is the 10,300-square-foot office suite on the second floor of the East Annex for SCRMC employees who will support Epic, SCRMC’s new electronic medical record system.

This space, which was previously used for storage, will now have 64 workstations, four offices, a conference room and various support stations for work areas, seating and printing. The space will have an industrial look featuring sealed concrete floors, freshly painted sheetrock walls and additional lighting.

“We are excited to see this space be used for such an important function of the hospital,” said Plant Operations Director, Stanley Coco. “The best thing about this renovation is that the industrial style makes the space extremely versatile. It was originally designed for patient care and the additions we have made can easily be removed if the space is needed for that purpose at a later date.”

Renovations are also taking place to accommodate the influx of internal medicine residents who are participating in the SCRMC Graduate Medical Education Program. A specific section on the third floor of the hospital is currently being renovated to include office space, a classroom, a lounge, a kitchen and sleeping spaces.

Other small improvements such as the creation of a new Nursing Administration Office Suite, cafeteria renovations and off-site clinic renovations are happening simultaneously with these larger projects.

Once completed, these improvements will greatly improve the patient’s experience and environment for physicians, providers and staff.
