Gun Safety Tips
Posted on February 14, 2025
According to an article from World Population Review’s website, 55.8% of adults have guns at home, which means that over half, however, adults who embrace their constitutional right to legally own a gun may not always think about where to safely store their firearms.
Guns in the home pose a huge risk to everyone, but especially to children who may tamper with them without their parents’ knowledge. According to an online article posted on healthychildren.org, “Between 2015 and 2023, there were at least 3,200 unintentional shootings by children age 17 and younger. These resulted in 1,200 deaths and 1,815 nonfatal gun injuries, nearly all among other kids.”
With this statistic in mind, please consider the following tips for how to practice gunsafety in the home:
-
Keep all firearms in a locked gun safe. Never keep your gun on a bedside table, in a drawer or in other easily accessible places.
-
Store and lock away ammunition separately.
-
Speak openly with your children about the dangers associated with guns, and how to practice safety around firearms.
-
Know where your children are and if there are firearms in the vicinity. For example, it is always advisable to check with friends or family members who you are entrusting your child’s care with to see if they keep guns in their home.
