Water Safety In and Around Your Home

Posted on March 27, 2025

Some dangers in the home are obvious such as electrical outlets, sharp kitchen utensils and cleaning materials but it is important to overlook the less obvious dangers like standing water of any kind. According to an article on Safekids.org, “Among preventable injuries, drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1 – 4 years old.” It is for this reason that it is important to adhere to the following water safety protocols inside and outside of your home.
Water Safety in the Home:
  1. Do not leave standing water, of any kind, in your home.
    1. Empty bathtubs immediately after use.
  2. Keep toilet lids closed.
    1. Install a safety latch if needed.
  3. Limit access to the laundry area.
Water Safety around the outside of the Home:
  1. Teach children how to swim.
  2. Instruct children that they are not allowed to play in or around water without an adult, even if they can swim.
  3. Put fences or barriers of some kind around pools or other bodies of water (hot tubs, ponds etc.).
  4. Empty kiddie pools immediately after use and store upside down and out of reach.
  5. Put away buckets and other water receptacles.
