Posted on September 2, 2025
Hurricane season has begun and now is the time to prepare. Here are some tips from the NOAA.gov for how to brace yourself and those you love for potential storms.
Know your risks:
- Know the difference between a watch and a warning.
- Stay weather aware by watching forecasts from the National Hurricane Center and local NWS.
- Consider your threats (tornadoes, storm surge, high winds, etc.).
- Assess the integrity of your home.
Prepare necessary supplies:
- Gather supplies (food, water, cash, batteries, gasoline, medications, etc.).
- Check on your neighbors and friends.
- Have a way to get weather alerts. Anticipate complete loss of cell service and internet.
Have a plan:
- Follow all evacuation orders.
- Create go bags.
- Have a plan for your pets. Create go bags for them too.
- Secure your homes and put away loose items.
Practice caution after storms:
- Avoid floodwaters and downed power lines.
- Use generators outdoors (at least 20 feet from the house).
- Prepare for the fact that traditional communication methods may not be operational.
