Welcome to Graduate Medical Education at SCRMC! South Central achieved sponsoring institutional status from ACGME on July 1, 2023. Following our ACGME site visit in the fall, we anticipate welcoming 10 internal medicine residents in July 2025. If you have questions about our program, contact us here.

Message from the Designated Institutional Official

“The South Central Regional Medical Center GME Program exists to create longevity for the important work that is already happening at SCRMC, and in other rural areas across the southeast. We believe that now, more than ever, it is vitally important that we train physicians who are thorough, well-rounded and empathetic.” – Deepu Thoppil, MD

Fun fact about Dr. Thoppil: He and his wife were recently featured as Mr. and Mrs. Claus in our inaugural physician calendar.

About the Program:  

South Central Regional Medical Center’s Internal Medicine Residency Program will offer advanced, hands-on medical training in a rural healthcare environment. 

The program will welcome its first residents in 2025. Residents will work in the newly-renovated GME suite, which is located on the third floor of the main hospital building and features office space, a classroom, a lounge, a kitchen and sleeping spaces.    

  • Mission: Our mission is to train exceptionally competent and steadfast internists who can lead underserved communities towards better healthcare.
  • Accreditation:  South Central achieved sponsoring institution status (7/1/23). We anticipate welcoming ten Internal Medicine residents in July of 2025.
